Kai Mantsch may be the first coach in his family, but a knack for fostering connection is in his blood. His grandfather knew how to get people talking.

“The most persistent memories I have of my grandfather are of walking through the park and suddenly not knowing where he was, only to find him somewhere behind us talking to yet another random stranger,” Kai says. “It could be a homeless person or someone in a suit. You never knew who it would be, but within minutes he would have them deeply engrossed in conversation. It is an inclination and a gift that my grandfather and mother had, and it seems to have been passed down to me.”

In addition to encouraging people feel safe to share themselves more fully, Kai is well-versed in a variety of external and internal martial arts practices. These practices have continued to unfold in new and different ways throughout his life.

“I still love going out to practice in the park in the morning when the fog still hangs in the air with a soft chill,” Kai says. “One of the wonderful things about martial arts is that it provides something for every stage of life. As a kid you get to spin around and kick things. As you get older, you discover that this was the beginning of a journey from spinning, to standing, to sitting quietly with the breath.”

Both eastern and western methodologies guide Kai’s work. They are part of a diverse toolkit that empowers him to help his clients navigate their personal journeys.

“There is an awareness that comes from these practices,” he says. “It helps me to get to know my clients, perceive what is just under the surface, and understand what will help them shift and grow.”
